Hello!
I'm Helena, founder of Cheerings, and I do love an earring. They just give me a lift. I own far too many and - the ridiculousness of this is not lost on me - even carry a spare pair 'just in case' (I know).
Cheerings happened when I was buying a gift for a friend going through a difficult time. Gifts like wine and flowers didn't feel right (sad and hungover staring at dying blooms = not the best combo), so I bought her a fabulous pair of earrings and told her they were Cheerings. Fabulous, feel-good earrings to give her a lift. Those dangles did their job and it felt good.
At the same time our amazing Mum’s dementia was escalating. My sister and I found learning how to care for her tough, but it opened my eyes to the wider world of unpaid carers, many of them young or caring for loved ones alone. I felt if anyone deserved cheer it was those people, quietly putting their needs aside for the love of another.
Those two experiences made me wonder if something simple like buying a pair of earrings could do two things; 1) bring a flash of cheer (well-needed or just because!) to you or someone you care about, and 2) do something small to help make life better for an estimated 13.6 million unpaid carers in the UK.
A while later when Cheerings came to life, the brilliant team at Carers UK agreed to let us help fundraise, so 10% of our profits will help support the amazing work they do. It’s nice to know that in a small way every pair supports those who care.
